Cambridge Family YMCA / Central House

Case Study:
Optimize Equipment Operation
Toni LaRosa, resident manager at the Cambridge Family YMCA and the YMCA Central House, just had the boilers and domestic hot water systems replaced. The YMCA Central House installed state-of-the-art boilers, but more energy could be saved by optimizing its operation. Their story illustrates the need to optimize your equipment.

Quality Control

At the YMCA Central House, the contractors installed the correct boilers; however, certain components were not installed correctly.  These errors reduce the boiler’s efficiency.  The YMCA was alerted by and with continued technical support by EnerSpective was empowered to take appropriate steps to ensure the correct installation. "EnerSpective has always been there when we have questions. It has been very comfortable to turn to them, if we needed something," say Ed Braga, Facilities and Maintenance Manager.

Commissioning

The story of the YMCA Central House also illustrates a mistaken belief that you can install a new piece of equipment into an older building without optimizing its operation. The new boilers installed were not operating at its highest efficiency, which is a common occurrence with condensing boilers. EnerSpective is working with the YMCA Central House to systematically increase its efficiency, matching its settings and controls to the particular conditions of their building.

(It is also worth noting that there is potential significant energy savings when optimizing the operation of existing equipment, which are not ready for replacement.)
